Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was surprised by the timing of the team's decision to fire former head coach Mike McCarthy.

The veteran coach was let go following Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, which dropped the Packers to 4-7-1 on the season.

And although the firing of McCarthy has long been rumored due to the team's struggles over the past few seasons, the timing of the whole thing caught Rodgers off guard.

Here's what the star quarterback had to say when he addressed the media on Monday, courtesy of NFL.com:

“I think we were all surprised last night. There's a great deal of frustration about the performance, individually and collectively as a squad, losing a game we should have won. Surprised about the timing, but those are decisions Mark [Murphy] is making with Brian [Gutekunst]'s help, and we're just going to keep moving forward.”

Rodgers has thrown for 3,504 yards this season to go along with 21 touchdowns and just one interception.

However, his play hasn't been enough to overcome the Packers' overall inconsistencies, which will likely keep the team out of the playoffs for the second straight season.

Green Bay is currently on a three-game losing streak, and Rodgers and company will return to the field on Sunday for a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

But with the season being a lost cause, Packers fans will probably turn their attention towards finding out who will replace McCarthy as the new head coach.
