It has been a bittersweet start to the 2021 NFL season for the Houston Texans. They surprised everyone by beating Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 and suddenly were leading the Cleveland Browns in Week 2. But Tyrod Taylor hurt his hamstring and didn't return to the game, and the Browns came back to win.
Now, Taylor is out for some time, with a possibility of a trip to the IR, and the Texans will start rookie Davis Mills for their Thursday night matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
But is Mills ready to step in and lead the way this soon? Either way, the Texans are thin at quarterback, with Deshaun Watson being a healthy inactive due to his legal situation. So, plain and simple, the Texans need to sign a quarterback.
3 options for Texans at QB
3. Robert Griffin III
Yes, this is an option. Griffin recently pioneered the Washington Football Team to make a run at him after Ryan Fitzpatrick went to the IR after just one game. He was with the Baltimore Ravens just a year ago as a backup to Lamar Jackson and threw 14 passes on the season.
The Texans aren't focused on the playoffs amidst a massive franchise rebuild, but putting out a competitive team is important to everybody and filling the stadium is a must.
Griffin's game is similar to Taylor's and this could be an option for the Texans.
2. Ryan Finley

Ryan Finley to the Texans makes sense due to his familiarity with the Texans system. The Cincinnati Bengals traded Finley to Houston, and then he was released a couple of months later.

He isn't the most attractive name, but the Texans need bodies at the position at this point. If Mills got injured against the Browns, the Texans would have turned to Mark Ingram to run the wildcat, which would have been dreadful.
Jeff Driskel is on the Texans practice squad. He’d be the next man up. Culley says if Davis Mills were injured yesterday, they would have run wildcat with Mark Ingram.

1. Cam Newton
The Texans bringing in Cam Newton makes sense all around. He was released from the New England Patriots before the season began, and some thought he would head to Washington to team up with former head coach Ron Rivera.
But, Newton is still available, and bringing him in would at least give the Texans a shot in games and would alleviate the sudden pressure of rookie Davis Mills. It would also give Cam a shot to bounce back after a dreadful 2020 season and could provide a nice patch option until Tyrod Taylor returns.
