The Houston Texans ended up winning the Demaryius Thomas sweepstakes as the Denver Broncos ended up taking their offer of a fourth-round pick and a swap of seventh-round picks.
According to Mike Klis of 9News, the Texans successfully beat out offers from the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles, who came close to landing Thomas. The Tennessee Titans also came in with a late bid.
But after missing out on Thomas, the Eagles ended up getting a wide receiver eventually as they traded a third-round pick to the Detroit Lions to land Golden Tate.
Meanwhile, the Patriots have come away empty on their quest for a “premium” wide receiver thus far as the trade deadline. Per Michael Giardi of NFL Network, the Patriots’ request for the Broncos to eat some money on the deal prompted the Broncos to go in a different direction.
Article Continues BelowAs for the Texans, they will be very glad to have Thomas in the fold. The veteran should be a capable replacement for Will Fuller, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in their win over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night.
Thomas is admittedly not having a great season by his high standards. Through eight games, he's recorded just 36 catches for 402 yards and three touchdowns. But with DeAndre Hopkins around, Thomas doesn't need to be the Texans' No. 1 receiver.
Thomas can just be a highly reliable secondary option for Deshaun Watson. His presence should greatly aid the Texans’ quest to return to the postseason with the AFC South basically theirs for the taking.
