The Indianapolis Colts suffered a heartbreaking loss in the 2019 NFL season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. It was a position that they likely would never have been in had it not been for the off day by kicker Adam Vinatieri.

Vinatieri missed a total of three kicks in the 30-24 loss. According to ESPN's Mike Wells, he was not shy about taking the blame for the loss:

“I was lousy,” said Vinatieri, who stood at his locker and waited for the media after the game. “Obviously, I did not kick well today and let my team down. They played well. Proud of the guys who fought their butts off and came back. … I feel like that loss is 100% on me. You play a team like the Chargers, who obviously are a good team, can't come in here and miss three kicks and expect to win. That's too many points to give away.”

Vinatieri's first miss came on an extra point following a touchdown pass by quarterback Jacoby Brissett. The following two would prove to be much more costly as the 29-yards, and 46-yard attempts sailed away from the uprights. It was the first time in his 24-year career that was unable to convert more than to field goals and an extra point in a game.

Vinatieri has long established himself as arguably the most clutch kicker in NFL history. It is the reason that the 46-year-old still appeared to be going strong in Indianapolis. Regardless, it is safe to assume that the veteran will have ample opportunities to prove that he still has plenty of juice left in the leg.
