With the 2019 NFL season rapidly approaching, the absence of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has started to raise some concern. It appears they still have yet to determine a timetable for his return.
Luck has missed the preseason while recovering from a lingering calf/ankle injury. According to Zak Keefer of The Athletic, head coach Frank Reich revealed that he will not be practicing this week:
Colts coach Frank Reich today: QB Andrew Luck will not practice this week. The issue remains a matter of “full speed movement vs. pain threshold.”
Luck is certainly no stranger to dealing with lingering injuries. This is why his latest prolonged absence had many concerned about a possible situation similar to 2017 when he was forced to miss the whole season.
Article Continues BelowLuck has managed to somewhat dispel this notion after he was seen getting some pregame work in prior to the Colts' matchup with the Cleveland Browns. While it was encouraging to see him moving around, the light workout is hardly an indicator of his potential return.
Indianapolis has a little over two weeks left before the 2019 NFL season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. Reports suggest they would ideally like to know Luck's status by the start of next week that way they know whether or not to fully take precautions.
The Colts have high expectations for the 2019 campaign, and they will need to do what they can to ensure he is healthy enough for a playoff run. Fortunately, their decision to keep backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett around this offseason will provide them with a viable option in case Luck is forced to miss some time to start the season.
