Chad Kelly spent the last seven months living in his parents' basement in Buffalo, New York.
That Kelly ended up there was his own fault, alone, after being kicked off of football teams in high school, college, and the pros. After his arrest in Denver last year for criminal trespass, he was released by the Broncos, who selected him with the final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Now, the quarterback is getting a shot in OTAs with the Colts, serving as their fourth quarterback while starter Andrew Luck is on the shelf with a calf strain.
Needless to say, Kelly knows this may be his final chance to prove himself.
“I have had multiple shakeups, but you know what, one thing is I am going to keep on bouncing back. Whether it’s yesterday, tomorrow, whatever the future might hold, but I am going to hit it straight on.”
Of course, words only go so far when actions say something different entirely. Kelly has a long record of immaturity that is unbecoming of a player at any level. And, if Kelly's uncle, Jim Kelly, wasn't friends with Colts coach Frank Reich, he might still be in that basement.
Nevertheless, Reich and the Colts are taking a shot on Kelly.
“Whenever you take a person in Chad’s situation, it’s a case-by-case basis,” Reich said. “I felt like … we would give Chad a chance here to come in and compete as the fourth guy coming in and felt comfortable at that point with it.”
How this all turns out is entirely up to Kelly, now.
