Famous for his ability to take down quarterbacks during his illustrious 13-year NFL career, former Indianapolis Colts pass-rusher Robert Mathis may have forgotten to take down a bottle of alcohol before getting behind the wheel on Thursday.
According to Mike Wells of ESPN, Mathis was arrested early Thursday morning in Carmel, Indiana on charges of drunk driving.
He (Mathis) was arrested shortly after midnight in Carmel, a suburb just north of Indianapolis, on the initial charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Carmel Police said the 36-year-old Mathis was driving the wrong way on a one-way street and did not signal a turn.
The 36-year-old Mathis retired shortly after the 2016 regular season concluded. He played his entire career with the Colts and is currently 17th all-time in sacks with 123.0.
Article Continues BelowWells’ report also noted that Mathis’ alcohol level did not exceed the legal limit of 0.8 in Indiana, but Carmel police said that the five-time Pro Bowler struggled to pass a series of sobriety tests.
Apparently, Mathis was just as incapable of driving a vehicle that morning as Chuck Pagano of running the Colts this season.
There will likely be more to come from this story. Considering he was legally under the limit, but still struggled, Robert Mathis may try to fight these charges. As likely, even more information will come to light as to how/why he was unable to pass the series of sobriety tests.
Thankfully, at least according to the reports, no one was hurt during the incident. Hopefully Mathis can learn from this and move on and enjoy what is left of his post-playing life.
