The Indianapolis Colts have expressed interest in free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota, according to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network.
Mariota will probably serve as a last resort for the Colts, as Indianapolis already has Jacoby Brissett under center and is also rumored to be in on Philip Rivers.
While Indy doesn't seem entirely comfortable with Brissett at quarterback, it's hard to imagine the Colts bringing in Mariota to supplant Brissett as the starter. If anything, Indianapolis would sign Mariota to provide some competition for Brissett, and should Brissett struggle, Mariota might get a shot.
Mariota, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oregon, was originally selected by the Tennessee Titans with the second overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.
The early returns on Mariota weren't bad.
He started 12 games during his rookie campaign, throwing for 2,819 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 62.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 91.5.
Mariota then showed distinct progression in 2016, finishing with 3,426 yards, 26 touchdowns and nine picks while completing 61.2 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 95.6.
Since then, however, it has been all downhill for the 26-year-old.
Mariota threw 13 touchdowns and 15 picks in 2017, and in 2018, injuries inhibited him throughout the season, and he ended up totaling 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
The Hawaii native then started the first six games of 2019 before eventually giving way to Ryan Tannehill as Mariota labored and completed just 59.4 percent of his passes.
The Colts went 7-9 this past year, going just 2-7 over their final nine games.
