The Oakland Raiders are already without top pass rusher Khalil Mack, who continues to hold out as he awaits a new contract. And now, they could be set to part ways with defensive end Mario Edwards Jr.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Raiders have been frustrated with the former second-round pick’s disappointing play and have been shopping him around. If the Raiders find no takers for Edwards, they might just outright cut him over the weekend.
Edwards, the 35th overall pick in the 2015 draft, has not lived up to expectations in Oakland. He has racked up just 5.5 sacks in 30 games over three seasons.
Article Continues BelowInjuries have played a part in his struggles. He landed on injured reserve at the tail-end of his rookie season due to a neck injury. He also missed most of the 2016 season due to a hip injury. He played less than 50 percent of defensive snaps last season as he had 3.5 sacks and 27 tackles in 14 games.
Edwards' likely departure has once again highlighted the significant concerns surrounding the Raiders' pass rush heading into the season. They are already highly reliant on starters Mack and Bruce Irvin and don't have much depth behind those two. And if Mack is not around — either due to his holdout or a trade — they will be in big trouble.
Rookie third-rounder Arden Key may have to play a big role this season if the Raiders do move on from Edwards. He projected as a first-round talent in this year's draft but slid due to off-field concerns.
