It's an open secret that Philip Rivers won't be suiting up for the Los Angeles Chargers by the time the next season begins. His atrocious performances throughout the season have all but ensured Tom Telesco will not keep him in the City of Angels.
However, the Chargers GM has made interesting comments about the long-time Chargers pass-caller, saying that Philip Rivers can still be an effective quarterback. However, he didn't specify if it was in a Chargers jersey.
Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams wrote more about the nature of Philip Rivers' future, and it's not looking so pretty for the veteran:
“He can still compete at a top-starter level,” Telesco said Thursday, via Daniel Popper of TheAthletic.com.
But Rivers is scheduled to become a free agent in March. His future with the Chargers is uncertain, and he said Sunday he is open to playing elsewhere next season.
Telesco said the Chargers will do a full evaluation of the roster to see where (if?) Rivers fits.
“In a perfect world, No. 17 is your quarterback forever,” Telesco said, via Eric D. Williams of ESPN. “Hopefully I’m not offending Dan Fouts when I say that, but he’s meant everything to this organization.”
Philip Rivers had a painful season with the Chargers. He did cover 4615 passing yards and had 23 touchdowns to show for it, but he also picked up 20 interceptions as well. He was also more of a liability in the pocket, not allowing the team any semblance of consistency.
Article Continues BelowIt's still unknown where Philip Rivers will play come September 2020, but it's understood that he won't be wearing Chargers gear by then.
