Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco says that offensive lineman Russell Okung will not be ready for Week 1, according to Eric Williams of ESPN.com.
Telesco said he wants to make sure that Okung, who has been limited to off-the-field conditioning work this summer as a result of a pulmonary embolism, is fully healthy before sending him into action.
He added that the team will have an update on Okung's status in a couple of weeks.
One possibility the Chargers can explore is placing him on the non-football illness list, which would keep him out for the first six games of the regular season, but it remains to be seen if Los Angeles explores that avenue.
Okung, who played his collegiate football at Oklahoma State, was originally selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the sixth overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.
He spent the first six years of his career with the Seahawks, making the Pro Bowl in 2012. Okung then proceeded to sign a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos in March 2016 before landing with the Chargers the following offseason.
The 31-year-old earned a Pro Bowl selection during his first year in Los Angeles in 2017. He has started 15 games for the Bolts in each of the last two seasons.
Meanwhile, the Chargers are coming off of a 2018 campaign in which they won 12 games and captured a Wild Card berth in the AFC. Los Angeles then went on to defeat the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round.
