The most surprising game of the week took place in Los Angeles on Sunday. The Los Angeles Rams took on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and suffered a 55-40 loss. This dropped the reigning NFC Champions to 3-1 on the season.
Jared Goff finished 45-68 for 517 yards in the loss. He threw two touchdowns and three interceptions. Yes, those are eye-popping numbers but if a quarterback throws the ball 68 times, it usually is not good for the team. This means that they are losing and trying to fight back.
Los Angeles put a lot of stock in Goff after the Rams score just three points in the Super Bowl. Goff has been called a product of head coach Sean McVay. Whether that is true or not, Goff needs to work to improve so he does not have to throw the ball 68 times in any game moving forward.
The main part of their offense that the Rams need to improve on is their run game. Todd Gurley must get involved more. He has not carried the ball 20 times in any game this season. Gurley has not rushed for 100 yards in a game yet in this season.
In Sunday's loss, Gurley carried the ball just five times. It is hard to run the ball when the team falls behind 21-0 early, but it is hard to justify one of the best backs in the league carrying the ball five times. Getting Gurley going will take the pressure off Goff who has not looked like himself.
Goff has thrown six interceptions in four games this season. He lost a fumble on Sunday that turned into a scoop and score for the Bucs' defense.
With Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Brandin Cooks, the Rams have one of the best receiver cores in the game. Goff needs to cut down his turnovers moving forward.
At 3-1, the Rams are clearly not dead but even in their wins, they have not looked like the defending NFC champs of last year.
If Los Angeles gets their run game going, cuts down on turnovers, and plays strong defense behind Aaron Donald, they can return to that level.
