All-Pro cornerback Aqib Talib was one of the several big splash additions for the Los Angeles Rams this offseason making him part of what could be a special team.
This was a decision that the Denver Broncos were poignant on making in hopes to move off of the final two years of Talib's deal, which had initially had a trade to San Francisco 49ers worked out before he voiced he wouldn't show up. According to Andy Benoit of Sports Illustrated, what made the decision to accept a trade to the Rams was the familiarity of playing in a defensive scheme under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
“I’m going on year 11, man. I’m not trying to go learn a whole new system. I wanted to go somewhere I’d be comfortable.” Talib said. “I’m comfortable if I can live at my house in Dallas and go just around the corner to work. I cut my bills in half. Or if I can go play in a defensive scheme that I’ve played in before. So I told him Dallas, New England or L.A.”
It simply comes down to the fact that Talib has the prior experience of playing under Phillips during his brief tenure as the defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos. This system helped become the backbone of what was arguably one of the best defensive units in quite some time with the secondary being a big piece of the puzzle.
This had also allowed for Talib to build a strong relationship with Phillips as he played a huge part in the game plan that helped build a powerhouse. The opportunity to be coached under him once again while playing for a team on the rise was a situation that he simply couldn't quite pass up on.
Los Angeles is hoping that Talib can be a major asset in the secondary while forming one of the league's most effective cornerback duos alongside Pro Bowler Marcus Peters.
