The Los Angeles Rams are limited in cap space this offseason, which could lead them to restructure some of their current contracts. In an attempt to help the team free up cap space this offseason, Jared Goff is open to restructuring his contract.
After the moves that they made in free agency, the Rams are currently the only team over the salary cap. As a matter of fact, Los Angeles is over the cap by around $6 million.
With the 2020 NFL Draft nearing, the Rams are going to need money to pay their incoming rookies. Provided that, Los Angeles could create some cap space this offseason by restructuring contracts. One contract that would make sense to restructure is Goff's massive deal.
Prior to the 2019 season, the Rams inked Goff to a four-year, $134 million extension. Heading into next season, the former No. 1 pick is slated to carry a cap hit of $36 million in 2020.
However, the Rams can reduce that number by turning part of his cap hit into bonuses. On the other hand, they could also move some of his money to later years in his contract.
In his first season after signing his lucrative extension, Goff finished with 4,638 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in 2019. Similar to most high-paid quarterbacks, Goff has been criticized for underperforming despite receiving a new deal.
Ahead of the upcoming draft, the Rams are faced with an uphill climb to return to being below the salary cap. While Los Angeles seeks ways to achieve that feat, Goff is already on board with restructuring his contract.
