Jared Goff delivered in a big way when the Los Angeles Rams called upon his number following John Wolford's exit in their Wild Card match-up against the Seattle Seahawks. The two-time Pro-Bowler, who had started all 16 regular season games for the Rams, served as the back-up on Saturday for Wolford.
Rams coach Sean McVay inserted Wolford into the starting lineup after liking what he saw from the 25-year old in their regular season finale against the Arizona Cardinals. Wolford started for Goff after the latter suffered dislocated thumb and sat out their Week 17 game. McVay opted to go this route to begin the playoffs, but offered reassuring words for Goff as he watched on the sidelines to begin their postseason.

Said Goff: “Sean made it very clear to me, ‘We're obviously not benching you. We need to have a plan moving forward and this week, with where you're at physically and what not…' I got it, to an extent. But it was tough.”
Knowing he'd still be active as Wolford's backup, Goff pushed to do as much as he could to prepare for the possibility he'd be summoned into service.“As a competitor, you want to be out there — but I prepared accordingly,” Goff said. “We were doing almost all I could ‘on air' throughout the week, just off to the side. I wasn't taking any reps against the defense, but I was just trying to get my thumb into a good place.”
Jared Goff admitted it was a tough experience just waiting there. The opportunity presented itself, which unfortunately came in an injury from Wolford. Nonetheless, Goff took full advantage of the chance and delivered for the Rams as they advanced to the next round.
Goff wanted to run out on the field and compete and try to lead his team to victory. The thought of standing and watching unnerved him to the core.
“Yeah, it was extremely hard,” Goff recalled after the Rams win. “It was one of the hardest things I've had to handle. The week was tough. I knew I had to prepare to be ready to play, in case they needed me. And I'm happy I did.”
