Sean McVay is a win away from returning to the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. And he has Matthew Stafford to thank for following the quarterback's clutch performance in Sunday's 30-27 road win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Divisional Round.
McVay talked about Stafford's clutch pass completion to wide receiver Cooper Kupp that set up the game-winning goal for kicker Matt Gay, and the head coach was understandably all pumped up.
Via Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated:
“To me, when you just see that dude, in crunch time, divisional game, going on the road, they tie it up after you have a huge lead, no flinch, no blink?” McVay said, standing on a wall halfway between the locker room and the team bus. “He was a bad MF-er in that situation.”
The Rams pulled off a trade with the Detroit Lions in 2021 that brought Stafford to Los Angeles. They wanted an upgrade at the quarterback position, and several months later, it's fair to assume that Los Angeles made the right decision, as the Rams' offense has simply taken off with Stafford orchestrating the attack on the field.
Stafford did not look too good toward the end of the regular season, but he's stepped it up since the playoffs started. Against the Buccaneers, he went 28/38 for 366 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns, while avoiding an interception.
