Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff struggled in the teams first game against the Carolina Panthers but coach Jared Goff but a lot of his struggles on the play selection.

Goff didn't look comfortable all afternoon throwing for only 186 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He only had 4.8 yards per attempt and a passer rating of 69.

McVay thought that Goff looked okay but believes the lack of stats come from the gameplan. McVay points out that they weren't caring about Goff's stats. Instead, they were trying to win a football game.

“I think it starts with some of the play selections,” McVay said via Pro Football Talk. “To Carolina’s credit, they did a good job. Really, at the end of the day, we were trying to win the football game and we felt like that approach was conducive for winning the game as a team. I thought he made good decisions, he took what the defense gave him — they played a lot of coverages where they were topping down some things. The biggest culprit I would say — as far as if you look from strictly a yard standpoint — it was more just the play selection than anything else. He executed fairly well with the stuff that he had a chance to activate based on the play selection and this week will provide another opportunity for us to hopefully all get better and it starts with me.”

McVay can blame it on the game plan, but Goff needs to play better going forward, or this team won't reach its goals of having a successful season.

Goff doesn't need to be a superstar for this team to have success, but they need him to more than a subpar quarterback going forward.
