The Los Angeles Rams have limited how much they use running back Todd Gurley, and according to coach Sean McVay, it's more than just about his knee.

During training camp he never practiced on consecutive days and in their Week 1 game against the Carolina Panthers, Gurley looked good but he still only had 15 touches.

On Thursday McVay was asked about the plan going forward, and he said that they are doing this to preserve his knee, but also to keep the rest of his body fresh for when they need him down the stretch run of the season.

“It’s just more about just managing how he is feeling,” McVay said when asked if it’s about keeping Gurley’s knee healthy via Rams Wire. “When you look at the pounding that running backs take – just in terms of just how their body is feeling. It’s not exclusive to any specific part of his body, it’s just really his body and he’s feeling good so that’s the approach we’ll take today.”

Gurley practiced on Wednesday and Thursday this week and hasn't appeared on the team's injury report yet. McVay said the plan is to get him to practice two of the three days during the week, but that isn't anything weird for the Rams. A lot of the time the Rams give their veterans a rest day during the week to keep them fresh for Sunday.

“I think it’s kind of by day. I think ideally, we’ve said in a situation where we’ve mapped it out over the course of the year, it’s probably two out of three days,” he said.

These early-season games are important, but most importantly the team needs him ready to play down the stretch run of the playoffs as they try to make another run for the Super Bowl.
