This offseason, the Miami Dolphins are undergoing a coaching change with the hiring of Brian Flores. As one of his first staff additions, Flores brought in Jim Caldwell as an assistant head coach.
According to the Dolphins official site, Caldwell is expected to take a medical leave from Miami. Caldwell will remain as a consultant for the team during the 2019 season. The Dolphins assistant head coach released a statement on his leave of absence.
“I will be stepping back due to some medical complications that require my full attention,” Caldwell said. “I want to thank Stephen Ross, Chris Grier, Coach Flores and the rest of the organization for the support they have given me and my family.”
Before coming to the Dolphins, Caldwell spent four seasons as the head coach of the Detroit Lions. In those four seasons, Detroit had a record of 36-28 and two playoff appearances. Although, they failed to win either of their playoff games.

Thus, why Flores likely saw Caldwell as a valuable addition to the Dolphins coaching staff. Caldwell was also likely brought in to help the quarterbacks as he's known to be great at developing quarterbacks.
Besides being a head coach, Caldwell was a quarterbacks coach for most of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, and the Baltimore Ravens. With those teams, Caldwell was a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams in the Colts and Ravens.
Now, Caldwell has medical concerns and hopefully, the longtime coach can get back to being one-hundred percent and get back to coaching on the sideline.
