The Miami Dolphins are loaded with draft capital and they seemed to have gotten overzealous in what they could do with their picks. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Miami tried to convince the Cincinnati Bengals to trade them the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Over the last couple of weeks, the Dolphins called the Bengals on more than one occasion to see if Cincinatti would be willing to trade the No. 1 overall pick. The Dolphins were told, in no uncertain terms, no. Cincinnati would not trade the pick and would stay put at No. 1.

Throughout the pre-draft process, it's been assumed that the Dolphins are targeting a quarterback early in the first round. Of course, Joe Burrow is the safest pick at quarterback in this year's draft, with him projected to go No. 1 to the Bengals.
With that in mind, Miami is just testing the waters to see if Cincinnati would bite on any offers for the No. 1 selection. Despite their efforts, it's apparent that the Bengals aren't willing to pass on the chance of making Burrow their next franchise quarterback.
Nevertheless, the Dolphins could turn their attention to making a trade early in the first round. Heading into the beginning of the draft on Thursday, Miami has the No. 5, No. 18, and No. 26 picks in the first round.

On Wednesday, there were reports that the Dolphins were attempting to acquire the No. 3 pick without parting ways with the No. 5 pick.
On the contrary, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reported that the Lions are preparing to make a selection with the fifth overall pick.
One final thing on the Dolphins-Detroit trade situation. I’ve been told tonight by person familiar with what Lions are thinking that they are making plans for having the No. 5 overall selection tomorrow night — Miami’s first scheduled pick of the draft tomorrow.

That could mean that Miami is set on taking a certain quarterback early in the draft. Even though the Dolphins couldn't manufacture a trade for the No. 1 pick, it's obvious they were shooting for the stars in trade talks ahead of the draft.
