The Minnesota Vikings have made efforts to shore up cap space by signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to an extension soon. Unfortunately, it appears there has been little headway made in the negotiations.
According to ESPN's Courtney Cronin, the Vikings have not made much progress on a deal with Cousins:

But it’s more likely that Cousins, who created substantial leverage for himself with a strong 2019 season, is going to wait to see what other quarterbacks make in free agency — particularly Dak Prescott — before agreeing to anything.”
Minnesota has ushered in some significant changes this offseason after parting ways with two integral members of their defense in cornerback Xavier Rhodes and defensive tackle Linval Joseph. Regardless, it seems they are hoping to avoid some substantial turnover on offense by securing Cousins for the long haul.
Minnesota is hoping to come up with a team-friendly deal that will shore up more resources to work with in free agency this offseason. Of course, it is still early in the process and there are a number of factors that still have yet to be considered. Among them is the looming extension for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
It is safe to assume that Cousins may opt to use Prescott's new deal as a benchmark for his own. He is certainly in no rush to come to terms so quickly with a year remaining still left on his deal. However, the Vikings will need to find a way to make it happen if they hope to use the extra cap space this offseason.
