Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs didn't spend his week leading up to Week 5 against the New York Giants like the rest of his teammates. He missed multiple practices, was subject to trade rumors, didn't exactly shoot the rumors down and was fined for his actions. Nevertheless, he was active on Sunday, while the Vikings won 28-10.
His quarterback, Kirk Cousins, believes the two are on the same page, in large part because Diggs is “one of the best players in the world,” as he said after the win, via Chad Graff of The Athletic.
Diggs caught six Cousins-thrown passes for 86 yards on Sunday. Cousins, on the other hand, went 22 of 27 for 306 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
After a putrid offensive performance in Week 4, Cousins came under heat from his teammate, wide receiver Adam Thielen, for not connecting on his deep-ball passing. In turn, the speculation of the Diggs rumors revolved around Cousins' inability to get him the ball.
Through the first four games of the season, Diggs had 13 receptions for 209 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 4.75 targets per game; that’s a far cry from 2019, in which he averaged nearly 10 per. The demise of his box score statistics was be credited to Minnesota’s shift from a pass-heavy offense to a run-heavy one as Cousins struggled to deliver the ball.
Cousins — at least for one game — got Diggs, and Thielen, the ball consistently. Perhaps he would not like to see one of his most talented teammates walk away.
Nonetheless, Cousins will need to continue to get the ball to “one of the best players in the world” next week, when the Philadelphia Eagles come into town.
