Minnesota Vikings running back Latavius Murray is set to become a free agent this offseason. It appears he will be looking for places where he has a chance to take on a heavier workload.

Murray has largely played a complementary role during his time in Minnesota. According to ESPN's Courtney Cronin, he would like to become a clear-cut starter.

“I want everybody to know — make no mistake about it, I want to play,” Murray said this offseason. “I want to start. I’m not content with being in a backup role, but I want to compete, and Dalvin knows that. We push each other. That’s what it’s about. But I would love to be back here for that opportunity to compete with and against them. That’s the only way you get better.”

Murray made his bones as a workhorse back when he started his career with the Oakland Raiders, however, things quickly changed when he signed with Minnesota prior to the 2017 campaign. He was ultimately outshined by rookie running back Dalvin Cook that year and had been relegated to a minor role in the offense as a result.

Cook's subsequent injuries over the past two seasons have allowed him to occasionally show off his prowess as a workhorse back. Such was the case this season when he rushed for 578 yards and six touchdowns on 140 carries. Unfortunately, there are not that many starting running back jobs left in the league. Although Murray may have his work cut out this offseason, the grueling nature of the position gives him good reason to be optimistic.
