Is New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick really giving praise to someone on his team in the media?

Hey, it's 2020, the is the year of the weird, so why not?

Joining the Rich Eisen Show, Belichick gave a lot of praise to his presumptive new starting quarterback, Cam Newton.

“He's an extremely hard-working player; first guy in, last guy out. He's studied hard and has spent a lot of extra time learning the offense. I've been very impressed with that. He's a very skilled athlete.” Belichick said.

For those who have watched and covered Newton this is nothing surprising. Coming to New England following nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers, Newton has always been a hard working player and has always focused on being the best. Injuries derailed his last couple of seasons with the Panthers, who released him in March. The release has seemed to just give Newton more fuel, and he is focused on showing the league — and most notably the Panthers — that he is still an elite level quarterback in the NFL.

The fact that Belichick mentions him as an athlete is a good sign, as that would presumably indicate his athleticism and running ability is still good, which was a concern for teams during his free agency. While not a guarantee, especially with Belichick indicating the possibility of a platoon system between the two, the praise from the six-time Super Bowl winning head coach would seem to indicate that Newton is ahead in the quarterback battle against Jarrett Stidham.
