The New England Patriots have done some major re-tooling with their receiving corps heading into the 2019 NFL season. Head coach Bill Belichick is now focused on building the chemistry between them and quarterback Tom Brady.
According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Belichick is putting an emphasis on developing the rapport in the passing game as soon as possible:
“I wish we could just wave a wand and all of that would happen, but unfortunately I don’t really see how that would happen,” Belichick said. “We’ll have to do whatever everyone that’s been here for a number of weeks has been doing, go out there and get the reps together and get our timing and develop that consistency and continuity and confidence on the field. I don’t know how to create that by just, like I said, wishing it or talking about it. At some point you’ve got to be able to go out there and be able to execute it. We’ve done some of it. We’ll do more. We’ll continue to do more and we’ll see where we’re at.”
There is certainly plenty of truth to Belichick's comments. Teams put in a lot of resources to shore up viable, consistent options for their quarterbacks. Although the Patriots experienced some turnover in that department this offseason, the expectations on offense still remain as high as ever.
Article Continues BelowThe retirement of tight end Rob Gronkowski leaves a rather notable void in the Patriots' receiving corps. Brady will need to rely on more than just wide receiver Julian Edelman as a safety net this offseason.
There is plenty of hype surrounding the arrival of wide receiver Josh Gordon along with the emergence of a couple of undrafted rookies in wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Gunner Olszewski.
Regardless, it remains to be seen how long it will take for them to develop the type of chemistry with Brady that Belichick is referring to.
They will have their work cut out trying to figure it out in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
