New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was given a new home in Foxborough after being waived by the Carolina Panthers, albeit only for a one-year stay. Questions revolving around the extension of his stay with the Patriots are already bugging him with free agency approaching.

However, as it stands today, it seems like the 2015 NFL MVP is taking his time to reassess his current situation and his future plans moving forward:

ā€œMan, I have interest in winning the Arizona Cardinals game (this Sunday). How about that?ā€ Newton said during a Monday morning appearance on WEEI’s ā€œGreg Hill Show.ā€ ā€œI mean, there’s so many things that I don’t even want to harp or dwell or even think. I think my, as the Bible says, my cupeth runeth overeth with just trying to focus on the near future rather than the far future.ā€

The former Auburn product has had a rather up-and-down season with the Patriots, with a strong followed by a bout with COVID-19 and then some immense struggles. Newton has since turned it around a bit after his prior downturn.

Newton came out firing in the Patriots' most recent matchup against the Houston Texans, generating 365 passing yards on 26-of-40 pass attempts to go with a passing touchdown. Patriots wideout Damiere Byrd was the recipient of a 42-yard TD pass from Newton.

Unfortunately, the Patriots eventually succumbed to a 27-20 defeat at the hands of the Texans en route to a 4-6 win-loss record. Newton and the rest of the team will need to perform at their highest level if they still want to grab a playoff seat by the end of the regular season, with basically no margin for error at this point.

A respectable showing to close out the 2020 season will only help Newton in free agency. Whether it's enough to get him a new deal with the Patriots remains to be seen.
