It seems that Cam Newton still has a lot to prove if he wants to take the starting job for the New England Patriots.

As per The Athletic, Newton isn't guaranteed the starting job and will need to impress come training camp to fill in Tom Brady's massive shoes.

Earlier on Sunday, the 31-year-old signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the Patriots after being released by the Carolina Panthers in March of this year. Newton was a beast on the field, but injuries limited the signal-caller's ability to stay healthy and suit up consistently for the Panthers in his nine-year stay with the team.

Now, Newton is slowly working his way to being in top form, and it looks like he's ready for a strong comeback.

As for the Patriots, they're hoping to welcome a new chapter in their franchise as the post-Brady era kicks off. The franchise does have a few passing power on their roster with the young Jarrett Stidham and vet Brian Hoyer, but adding Cam Newton into the mix will definitely boost their chances offensively.

Coming into the squad, the 2015 NFL MVP is definitely the biggest name in the Patriots' current roster. However, as mentioned, Newton's previous accolades won't automatically boost him to the starting lineup. The 2011 Rookie of the Year has yet to put up impressive numbers after his MVP season, as he struggled with numerous injuries in the latter part of his career in Carolina.

The starting QB spot is up for grabs and it's going to be interesting who Bill Belichick will pick come the 2020 NFL regular season.
