After the season ended, it was speculated that Cam Newton would be playing for a new team next year, mainly due to the fact the New England Patriots organization said so themselves. However, in a recent turn of events, Cam Newton is coming back to New England on a one-year deal, per Jim McBride.

Newton had an abysmal year throwing the ball, finishing with 2,657 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. However, his rushing was completely there, as he served as a top rusher for the Patriots offense, where he rushed for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns.

He had a better season than the stats suggest. In fact, most of the touchdowns he threw came before he contracted COVID-19. After coming back from quarantine, Newton was never able to bounce back.

The Patriots are gaining traction this offseason with the return of Dont'a Hightower, Patrick Chung, and Marcus Cannon. Bringing back Newton gives this franchise a veteran quarterback during this transition away from Tom Brady.

The front office has some work to do, as the offense is still rather depleted. They should highly consider bringing back Joe Thuney, and they have to find weapons in the wide receiver group. Having Newton puts a buffer on the quarterback situation, as it's still possible the front office drafts a rookie in the upcoming NFL draft.

New England currently holds the 15th pick overall. They may be just on the outside of drafting one of the top four quarterback prospects. Additionally, this front office never trades up. If anything, it's more possible they trade back and potentially draft Mac Jones, or even take a rookie much later in the draft.

Either way, Cam Newton is back and aims to be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots next year.
