The New England Patriots took quite a hit on the offensive side of the ball on Thursday morning after wide receiver Josh Gordon decided to walk away from football to address the state of his mental health. According to Colin Cowherd, the Patriots are in big trouble with Gordon out of the remainder of the season.

Cowherd holds Gordon to a very high standard, and since he believes the Patriots are automatically eliminated from Super Bowl contention speaks volumes about the talent Gordon possesses. Gordon was a great addition to the Patriots after they traded a future fifth-round draft pick for him. Unfortunately, his agreement was not fulfilled on his end as he now faces a possible career-ending suspension.

Gordon had 737 yards and four touchdowns this season and looked to be gaining Tom Brady's trust throughout the season. The Patriots' receiving core has been abysmal at best this season aside from Julian Edelman. Chris Hogan has been irrelevant, Phillip Dorsett rarely sees targets, and Cordarelle Patterson has been more effective as a running back. Worst of all, Rob Gronkowski has struggled to stay on the field as usual, and when he has been out on the field he hasn't been effective. It appears New England could, in fact, be in trouble in terms of having a reliable receiver to complement Edelman.

Gordon desperately needs to get help, and it's sad that his off-field problems have drastically affected his football career.
