Tom Brady shocked the NFL world back in March when he decided to leave the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ending a remarkable 20-year run in Foxborough.

So, what was going through the mind of Patriots safety Devin McCourty throughout the process? Well, at first, not much, because he was a free agent himself:

“I honestly didn't think twice about Tom Brady's free agency, because I was a free agent,” McCourty told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “That was my main concern, where my family would end up. Would we be back in New England?”

But once McCourty re-signed with New England, he began to think more about Brady and the Pats' other free agents:

“Then when I signed my deal and I was back, you kind of think of all the guys. Tom, the Kyle Van Noys, the Jamie Collins'. All of those guys you had relationships with, Mathew Slater,” said McCourty. “That you kinda know, man, this could be it. That could have been the last game I played with these guys. When he made a decision, to me it wasn't like the end of the world.”

McCourty added that he is “happy” for Brady and that the legendary quarterback was a “great teammate.”

“You become a free agent, that's what our league is about,” said McCourty. “That's what players before us have fought for. Be a free agent and choose.”

During Brady's two-decade-long stay with the Patriots, he won six Super Bowl championships, establishing himself as the greatest signal-caller ever in the eyes of most.

Now, he will get a chance to add some more hardware in a different location.
