The New England Patriots clearly haven't given up hope on the prospect of Josh Gordon playing football this season. Less than a week after Tom Brady posted a video of him throwing with the suspended wide receiver, Julian Edelman went out of his way to make it obvious just how much he wants Gordon to be reinstated – not just for his own personal benefit, but because the Patriots could use a “really good tool” like him in their receiving corps.

“It's a life situation, and you're pulling for him that – to get better. And then selfishly, I want him because he's a really good football player and he can help us,” Edelman said on the Pardon My Take podcast, per Zack Cox of NESN. “I don't know anything [about when/if Gordon might be back] going into it. Like, legit. Like, I've asked 30 people inside the organization and outside of [it], like, ‘Do you know what's going to happen?' And no one knows not one thing. So we're just kind of sitting and waiting to see what the circumstances are going to be with him, because he'd be a really good tool to have. He balls.”

Gordon was suspended indefinitely in December for violating the terms of his reinstatement under the league's substance abuse policy. He has a long history of mental health and addiction troubles, the former of which he alluded to as the reason he was “stepping away from the football field” in a statement thanking New England following news of his suspension.

The former First Team All-Pro was traded to the Patriots from the Cleveland Browns in September of last season. In 11 games with New England, Gordon had 40 catches for 720 yards and three touchdowns.
