Coordinators Matt Patricia and Josh McDaniels aren’t the only key pieces the New England Patriots may be saying goodbye to after the Super Bowl. Cornerback Malcolm Butler could also be playing his final game as a Patriot against the Eagles.

According to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe, Butler admits he’s thought about that very real possibility. However, he says he’s ready to put his future aside and concentrate on the big game.

“Yeah, it crossed my mind,” Butler said yesterday at Gillette Stadium. “But you know what, man, the only thing that matters is doing whatever I can to help the team win this last game of the season. This is the biggest game of the season. I’ve got to put all (the contract ramifications) in the drawer. That’s not important right now. Over the years, I learned that it isn’t always about you. It’s about the team. Whatever is best for the team, I’ve got to do. (The contract) is not even important right now. I just want to win this championship. Just got to win, man.”

Despite spending just four years with the team, Butler already sealed his place in Patriots lore as a rookie way back in 2015. He made one of the most famous plays in Super Bowl history as he intercepted Russell Wilson’s pass at the goal-line to seal another New England championship.

Butler also could’ve left the team in the offseason as he was rumored to be a potential part of the trade which brought Brandin Cooks to New England. However, he stayed on for another season. And if this actually is his final game with the Patriots, he has the incredible opportunity to cap his magical four-year run with a third Super Bowl ring.
