The New England Patriots will be missing the services of another veteran starter for the upcoming season. This time, it's right tackle Marcus Cannon who announced his official opt out earlier today. The 32-year old player will be skipping the 2020 football proceedings because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reported the recent developments on Cannon's situation:
“According to a source, Cannon has seriously considered opting out in recent days, often discussing the possibility with his family,” Guregian reported. “Along with the Patriots’ other veterans, Cannon was expected to report to Gillette Stadium on Tuesday for COVID-19 testing. However, as of Monday night, Cannon now plans on missing the season altogether.”
Cannon, 32, beat non-Hodgkin lymphoma during his rookie year in 2011 and is likely considered high-risk for complications from COVID-19. That likely qualifies him for a $350k stipend advance — instead of a $150k advance for non-high-risk players. In addition to that, his playing contract will roll over to 2021.

With Cannon joining a long list of Patriot opt outs, New England will have to look at backup options at the tackle position. Sophomore Yodny Cajuste, third-year player Korey Cunningham, and rookie Justin Herron are the top options to play opposite Isaiah Wynn, the former first-round pick who is projected to start at left tackle for New England.
A depleted New England side will still aim to compete with the players left at its disposal. The team will begin its 2020 campaign against AFC East rival Miami Dolphins on September 13 at Foxborough.
