The New England Patriots got screwed by the refs in Monday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

With six minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Patriots sacked Patrick Mahomes, resulting to a fumble. However, before New England could recover the fumble and score a touchdown, the refs ruled the play dead.

After the play was over, former NFL official and current CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore explained what happened:

“Even on this play, Jim, if the whistle does occur, the immediate action following that ruling with the whistle you have an opportunity there to still put that play back and rewind it and do the right thing. If Coach Belichick just throws that flag as quickly as he can, we have to stop and take that review. It would've also helped if Corrente would've announced what the ruling was on the field to give them an idea of what to challenge or not challenge. But we can clearly see this is an interception.”

Mike Pereira, who's also a former NFL ref, disagreed with Steratore and said the play “was not reviewable.”

Nevertheless, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was clearly not happy on that play. Before he got a chance to challenge, the Chiefs rushed their special teams unit onto the field and punted the ball away.

Considering that the Patriots were only down by three at the time, it was certainly a game-changer. The Patriots were unable to get their momentum back for the rest of the game.
