The New England Patriots are signing kicker Nick Folk, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Patriots released fellow kicker Mike Nugent on Tuesday, clearing the way for Folk.

Folk last appeared in the NFL in 2017, making six of his 11 field-goal attempts before being placed on the injured reserve list. The Buccaneers then released him that ensuing offseason and he had not been back in the league since.

The 34-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Arizona, was originally selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round (178th pick overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft.

He had an impressive rookie campaign, converting 26 of his 31 field-goal tries and making the Pro Bowl as a result.

Folk went on to spend the first three years of his career with the Cowboys, but thanks to a disastrous 2009 season in which he missed 10 field goals, Dallas parted ways with him that offseason, and he linked up with the New York Jets.

He would proceed to spend the next seven seasons of his NFL tenure with the Jets and produced mostly solid results, connecting on 82.2 percent of his field-goal tries in New York.

Over the course of his 11-year career, Folk has nailed 80.3 percent of his field goals.

Kicker has been a problem for the Patriots all year, as Stephen Gostkowski suffered a hip injury last month and was placed on the injured reserve list at the beginning of October.

It has not stopped New England from going an NFL-best 8-0 thus far, however.
