Death, taxes and the New England Patriots winning the AFC East division title.
By beating the Buffalo Bills 24-17 on Saturday, the Patriots are officially the winners of the AFC East 2019 crown. In doing so, they have won the division 11 seasons in a row. The last team to win it was the Miami Dolphins in 2008, the same season that Tom Brady tore his ACL and MCL.
It's fair to say that the Patriots have dominated the AFC East. They won it five times in a row before the Dolphins did so in 2008.
The 2019 iteration of the Bills gave the Patriots a run for their money, and it's certainly a team that they respect.
“Buffalo’s certainly had a good year,” coach Bill Belichick said on Dec. 17. “They’ve got a good football team, do a lot of things well. That’s reflected by their record and the way they’ve played. Impressive win against Pittsburgh, certainly against Dallas on a short week down there on Thanksgiving. It came down to the last play against the Ravens. So, they have a good offense, good defense, good in the kicking game.”
However, for as good as the surging Bills have been in 2019, they have not beaten their demons in Foxborough. The Patriots won both outings between the two Northern teams, in turn, solidifying their dominance on the division.
Nonetheless, the AFC East will send two teams to the postseason in 2019. Both the Patriots and Bills will make it. New England needs a Kansas City Chiefs loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday to clinch a first-round bye. Meanwhile, the Bills are slated to face the Houston Texans in Texas in the first round.
