The New England Patriots have dominated the rest of the NFL since head coach Bill Belichick came aboard. With the Patriots making nine trips to the Super Bowl and winning a total of six titles under Belichick, his prowess as a front office executive has led the AFC East franchise to the postseason year after year.

“From 2000 to 2015, the window of this league-wide study, Belichick did his best work in the first round, bringing in All-Pros Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Logan Mankins and Jerod Mayo and Super Bowl staples Devin McCourty, Nate Solder and Dont’a Hightower,” reads Jeff Howe of The Athletic. “Despite making only 15 first-round picks over that span (tied for 17th-most), the Patriots ranked in the top quarter of the league in All-Pros (tied for fifth) and players who signed a second contract (tied for eighth).”

The Patriots are able to find value in places that other franchises simply cannot.

“Interestingly, the fourth round has been a sweet spot, as the Patriots were the only team to find two All-Pros (Asante Samuel, Stephen Gostkowski), and seven (tied for third-most) of their picks signed extensions,” the aforementioned article continues. “Shaq Mason and James White are the most recent hits. They’ve been productive in the fifth round, too. They’re one of seven teams to draft an All-Pro (Matthew Slater), and four players (tied for sixth-most) landed extensions: Dan Koppen, Slater, Marcus Cannon and Joe Cardona.”

The Patriots have now won two of the last three and three of the last five Super Bowls.
