Bill Belichick has been the New England Patriots' head coach for over two decades now, and if it's up to Robert Kraft alone, he's not changing anything any time soon.
Kraft certainly wants to keep Belichick for long even after 22 years together. However, at 69 years old, questions and concerns about the veteran tactician's future with the team are only going to grow.
If there is anyone who can coach for another decade, though, the Patriots owner believes it's Belichick. That is why when he was asked years ago how long does he see the six-time Super Bowl champion managing the New England franchise, Kraft didn't hesitate in saying beyond 80 years old.
“Several years ago at the league meetings, Robert Kraft told me that he wants to see Bill Belichick coach into his 80s. He wants to see him perform at a high level like a Warren Buffett or a Rupert Murdoch well past his 80th birthday. He believes he can,” Kraft reportedly told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk during league meetings several years ago.
Sure enough, Bill Belichick hasn't shown any signs of slowing down as he continues to help build another championship contender with the Patriots.
After a year off from the playoffs, the Patriots returned to the postseason in 2021 behind new QB Mac Jones. While they ended up losing in the Wild Card round, it was still a positive step in the right direction for the team.
It remains to be seen if Belichick can actually continue coaching at his 80s. He is a brilliant mind with the accolades to back it up, but after years in football, it won't be surprising if he's thinking about retirement or moving on from coaching.
