Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels looked ready to join Matt Patricia out the door in New England and become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason. But in a highly controversial move, McDaniels made a late U-turn on the Colts to stay in his current role with the Pats.

Apparently, that whole saga didn’t sit too well with head coach Bill Belichick, but not because of McDaniels. Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports that the McDaniels situation is one of the main issues at the heart of Belichick’s ongoing drama with owner Robert Kraft and quarterback Tom Brady, who strongly influenced the decision to keep McDaniels aboard.

“As for Belichick, he is reportedly irritated because he believes Brady tugged on (owner) Robert Kraft to make moves (Jimmy Garoppolo, Josh McDaniels) which ultimately forced Belichick’s hand,” Guregian wrote. “My sources confirm Brady had a hand in bringing McDaniels back at the 11th hour, after the latter was headed to Indianapolis to be the Colts coach.”

While Brady has not been shy about going off on McDaniels on the sidelines, it speaks to his level of trust and comfort in him as an offensive coordinator that Brady actually went to the owner to try and keep him aboard.

McDaniels has now been Brady’s quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator for a total of 13 years, so it makes sense that the two would form that type of strong relationship over time. And with Brady heading into the twilight of his career, he probably didn’t want to undergo such a massive change that McDaniels’ departure would bring. At the end of the day, Brady's gain was once again the Colts' loss.
