With the news coming out Monday morning that Drew Brees needs surgery and will be out about six weeks it means that the rest of the offense is going to need to step up for the New Orleans Saints, specifically Alvin Kamara.

Teddy Bridgewater took over for Brees against the Los Angeles Rams and is expected to be the starter going forward. Bridgewater didn't look comfortable throwing for only 165 yards and a big reason was the team couldn't get a run game established.

Against the Rams, Kamara only rushed for 13 times for 45 yards and caught one pass for 15 yards. How the Saints offense will look with Bridgewater under center is a big question but one thing is for sure, Alvin Kamara needs to be the guy carrying the offense.

One of the big issues against the Rams was Bridgewater wasn't targeting Kamara out of the backfield, and that is something that needs to change. Bridgewater said after the game he thought the Saints were more physical and that is why they struggled.

“We knew that it was going to be a physical battle and we knew the most physical team would walk away with the win,” Bridgewater said after the game via nola.com. “It showed on the stat sheet and it showed on the scoreboard.”

Against the Houston Texans in Week 1, Kamara caught seven passes and they need to make sure that is still apart of the offense.

The offense looked very one dimensional with Bridgewater leading the troops and if Kamara isn't a threat out of the backfield they can key in on his running and that takes away a lot of his effectiveness.

It will allow defenses to put more focus on the wide receivers and the run game, and less on what Kamara can do with his speed in space.

A lot of Kamara's success running comes from the threat that comes with his catching and it's something that can't be lost.

Will this Saints offense look different without Brees? Of course, it's going to look a lot different and won't be as explosive, but as long as Kamara is having success, this is still a team that can win a lot of games.
