Alvin Kamara is entering a contract year with the New Orleans Saints, but he doesn't seem too concerned about when a deal gets done. While the dual-threat running back looks to bounce back from an injury-marred campaign in 2019, he commented on a long-term contract with the Saints.
During an appearance on NFL Network's Inside Training Camp Live, Kamara kept it short and sweet as to how he's approaching his contract.
“Whenever that gets handled, it gets handled. I'm just doing what I gotta do for now.”
Kamara also spoke about how he's motivated to put the injuries he dealt with last season behind him in 2020.
“Honestly, I just want to go out and be the best version of me. Obviously, last year with injuries I was kinda held back, didn't get to really do what I wanted to do. I was on pace the first couple of games and was feeling great. I just want to show what everybody's used to and that's a powerful, explosive, highlight-making running back. So that's what I'm focused on.” Reaffirming his focus, when he was asked about the prospects of securing a new contract — he's entering the final season of his rookie deal — Kamara said that's not weighing on his mind. “I don't know where we at. I'm here working, I'm here practicing,” Kamara said.
Since being drafted by the Saints in 2017, Kamara has been a pivotal piece in New Orleans' offense. After producing a career-best 1,592 scrimmage yards and 18 touchdowns in 2018, Kamara saw his numbers decline a bit in 2019. Due to nagging knee and ankle injuries, Kamara finished with 1,330 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns last season (both are career-lows).
Despite the injuries a season ago, Kamara still has a chance to earn a massive payday next offseason. With that being said, the former third-round pick is focused on controlling what he can control in 2020.
