New Orleans Saints kicker Wil Lutz has been Mr. Consistent since joining the team in 2016, and Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara had no doubt he would make the game-winning field goal on Monday night against the Houston Texans.
Lutz made a 58-yard field goal as time expired to allow the Saints to escape with a two-point victory and move to 1-0 on the season. Brees said from the moment the ball left Lutz's foot, he knew it was going through:
“We all felt like it was going to happen the minute we heard that ball go off his foot,” Saints quarterback Drew Brees said, per ESPN. “It was a thundering kick, and we all knew it was going in the uprights.”
Kamara echoed Brees thoughts, saying they see Lutz do it all the time in practice. He knew if they got into field goal position, Lutz would do the rest:
“We all knew,” Saints running back Alvin Kamara said. “We see him do it in practice. If we get Wil in position, we knew he could hit it.”
Lutz was also confident in his abilities and knew that he would have a good chance to make any field goal he was asked to kick:
“Obviously, I'm confident in what I do. I'm confident in my operation. I knew with 37 seconds left that we were going to have an opportunity to get at least close to field goal range. In that situation, there's not a single kick I'd turn down,” Lutz said.
The Saints didn't play a perfect game, but they still were able to come away with a victory.
