Despite conflicting reports about New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara being made available for trade, it seems the team is at least doing its due diligence.

Kamara is looking for a lucrative extension heading into the final year of his rookie contract. According to Jeff Duncan of The Athletic, they are hoping to get a first-rounder in exchange if they are unable to reach a long-term deal:

Although the Saints are reportedly willing to pay Kamara top-5 money for a running back, his camp is looking for a deal that puts him in the same price range as Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey. Given the team's current cap situation, the writing is now on the wall for his potential departure.

There would certainly be no shortage of interest for Kamara on the trade market given his impressive resume as a three-time Pro bowler and one-time All-Pro. However, the prospect of New Orleans getting a first-round pick in exchange seems about as far-fetched as him expecting to sign a deal that will pay the same as McCaffrey's. Regardless, it is indicative of the kind of return they are expecting when the time comes for negotiations.

Kamara remains absent from practice, which is hardly an encouraging sign for his contract situation with the start of the 2020 NFL season just weeks away. Should their negotiations ultimately fall through, it will be interesting to see if there are any teams willing to meet the Saints' price tag considering how the situation with former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette just played out.
