Drew Brees has commanded the New Orleans offense for years, and despite the Saints having one of the best possible records in the NFL, the discussion about his play is harsh.

Many skeptics stated that Brees has been unable to force the football down the field, but Ross Jackson, the host of the daily Locked On Saints podcast, makes the argument that it doesn’t matter one bit.

Jackson: Drew Brees continues to be a magician so far this season and he’s doing so without pushing the ball down the field. This is one of the big things I wanted to talk about. We’re going to hear every game about how Drew Brees only throws for about six air yards per attempt and how that’s among the last place in the NFL and all this other stuff.

What you’re never going to hear about is the fact the Saints win with a system that supports that. You’re never going to hear about that. But that is the most important thing. Sean Payton’s system, Drew Brees’ system, the system that they’ve created together, supports and really bolsters that type of play to where it's about going out there, not making mistakes, and driving the ball down the field meticulously, death by a thousand paper cuts type of an offense.

We have seen that in New Orleans since 2016 and 2017 and instead of anyone talking about the Saints being the winningest team during that portion of time, what you’re going to hear about is that New Orleans, or Drew Brees rather, can’t throw the football down the field.
