In his first season in the NFL, New York Giants tight end Evan Engram burst onto the scene as one of the rising young stars at the position with his game-changing ability as a pass catcher.
However, he had notably struggled holding onto the ball making 11 dropped passes, which ranked in the entire league this past campaign. It is an area that Engram has zeroed on this offseason in hopes of seeing a vast improvement in his second season, according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
“That was just a mindset thing. I wanted to have zero drops all spring,” Engram said. “I knew what I was doing wrong. I knew how to fix it. I knew how to improve on it. So it was just a learning experience. I have the utmost confidence in myself. It’s definitely something that pisses me off a little bit, but I feel like that’s a good thing. So I never lost my confidence. It just kind of humbled me a little bit and allowed me to get back to the basics and be more consistent.”
Engram's laser-sharp focus toward improving that aspect of his game could see him become a more sure-handed receiving option for quarterback Eli Manning. He has certainly shown that he has the talent to be a huge factor in the passing game, it's just a matter of him being able to haul more balls that are in his catching radius.
The 23-year-old took advantage of the increased opportunity to be a primary receiving target last year with the plethora injuries at wide receivers as he hauled in 64 catches for 722 receiving yards and six touchdowns. The fact that he was able to handle the increased workload should see him be relied upon as a primary offensive weapon alongside wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard as well as rookie running back Saquon Barkley.
The Giants could quickly become something special offensively this upcoming season, which makes tightening up this aspect of his game even more critical in his development.
