The New York Jets are hurting at the running back position and they've added a new face to the backfield on Friday. According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, New York claimed Ty Johnson off of waivers in hopes to bolster their running back room.

During Thursday night's loss to the Denver Broncos, the Jets deployed 37-year-old Frank Gore as their No. 1 back alongside Sam Darnold. Besides Gore, while Le'Veon Bell continues to battle a hamstring injury, New York has utilized Kalen Ballage and rookie La'Mical Perine at running back.

After seeing the dire need at running back, the Jets are bringing in Johnson to provide them with some much-needed depth. Before joining New York, Johnson was released by the Detroit Lions on Thursday after the team activated Jayron Kearse to the active roster.

A season ago, Johnson saw some playing time for the Lions due to an array of injuries at running back. Johnson, a sixth-round pick for Detroit in the 2019 NFL Draft, carried the ball 63 times for 273 yards in 2019. He would also catch 24 passes for 109 yards for the Lions.

Despite his contributions from last season, the Lions have become crowded in the running back room this season. Besides taking D'Andre Swift early in the 2020 NFL Draft, Detroit also added Adrian Peterson ahead of the 2020 season. Not to mention, Kerryon Johnson is also seeing snaps at running back through the first three weeks.

There's no denying that the Jets are a complete mess offensively and Johnson could still have a tough time seeing the field. Still, Johnson will give New York another body until Bell is able to return this season.
