One of the underlying storylines for much of the NFL offseason has been free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick's future in the league.
Kaepernick has remained on the open market for the entire offseason since opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in early March. During an appearance on FS1 studio show “First Things First,” NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell stated that he believes the 29-year-old will another chance to play in the league. And I’m still convinced that he’ll get that opportunity when the right opportunity comes along. That’s what our league’s all about.”
“I’m not a football expert,” Goodell said. “I’m a huge fan. I have a role as commissioner also, but for me I watch the games and enjoy and I let the football people make those decisions. And the reality is there’s 32 different decisions, and multiple decisions within an organization, so there’s always a dispute. The idea of who can play, who can’t play, who’s best for our system and not best for our system, are decisions that should be made by those 32 teams.”
Although Goodell was quick to point out that he's not involved in the decision-making process for any NFL team, his words do hold some weight. This situation may come down to an opportunity presenting itself to Kaepernick over the next several weeks. It could be due to an injury or possibly another similar situation, but there are certainly scenarios that would make him a viable option.
His political stances aside, Kaepernick has shown to possess more than enough talent to be on an NFL roster at the very least being a backup quarterback. Keep in mind; he had helped lead the 49ers to two deep playoff runs, including a Super Bowl appearance.
Ultimately, it's something that will play itself out over the next few months of the 2017 NFL season.
