The Washington Redskins are a storied National Football League franchise. While the team hasn't seen the greatest luck over the last few years, there's a lore worth recalling. Such as the best free agent signings the franchise has ever made.

With that in mind, and with history as our ally, let's trot about the historical universe, taking a gander at the five best free agent signings in Washington Redskins history!

5. Terry Allen

Allen would make his mark with the Redskins in his second season, rushing for 1,353 yards and a league-best 21 rushing touchdowns to land a spot in the Pro Bowl and Second All-Pro team in 1996.

He was named as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins in 2002.

4. Brad Johnson

Johnson posted a career-high in passing yards (4,005) during his first year with Washington in 1999 to land him a spot in the Pro Bowl.

His finest performance as Redskin came in Week 4 when he erased a 21-0 deficit against the Carolina Panthers courtesy of a 334-yard, four-touchdown, afternoon.

3. Marcus Washington

Washington made an immediate impact during his first season with the Redskins. In 2004, he recorded 107 combined tackles and 4.5 sacks to earn an invite to the Pro Bowl of that year.

The linebacker would spend five seasons with the Redskins before transitioning as a coach at the collegiate level.

2. Marco Coleman

When the Redskins signed Coleman back in 1999, he immediately made it clear that D.C. was the perfect spot for him.

“This is definitely a better fit. I'm very comfortable with the coaching staff, the players, the ownership, the city, the fans.”

Coleman would play all 16 games in his first year with the Redskins and would earn a Pro Bowl appearance in 2000.

1. London Fletcher

Fletcher was already 32 years old when the Redskins signed him to a five-year, $25M contract but proved to be worth every penny in the latter stages of his stellar career. The veteran linebacker recorded 12 interceptions and was the NFL leader in combined tackles in 2011 with 166.

Known for his longevity and durability, Fletcher never missed a game for the Redskins and would end up sixth all-time in the NFL consecutive games started list.

Fletcher would be inducted in the Redskins Ring of Fame in 2019.
