Cam Newton has no intention of hanging up the spikes in 2021.
Newton joined Brandon Marshall, Chad Ochocinco and Fred Taylor on the “I AM AN ATHLETE” podcast recently, speaking on the challenges of playing amid a pandemic and talking about his experience with the New England Patriots.
When asked about possible retirement, Newton said he is too proud to quit when he knows he can still be a starting quarterback in the NFL:
“Hell no! I can’t go out like that. I hear all of that talk. My pride won’t allow me to do it. There aren’t 32 guys better than me,” Newton said, via Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.
Cam Newton will be a free agent this spring, and it remains to be seen how teams will evaluate his 2020 campaign.
On a positive note, Cam stayed healthy. He missed a game after contracting COVID-19, but suited up for 15 contests. The 31-year-old also completed close to 66 percent of his pass attempts and rushed for 592 yards on 4.3 yards per carry.
However, Newton also ranked fifth in bad throw percentage, per Pro Football Reference. That might be the best sign for a guy who has struggled with the deep ball and dealt with shoulder injuries.
Still, Newton could very well get an opportunity given the number of teams possibly in search of new quarterbacks in 2021. Perhaps Newton will reunite with Ron Rivera–who coached Cam in Carolina–and sign with the Washington Football Team.
Regardless, Newton made it clear he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
