It has been over six years since the NFL has experienced a lockout that nearly threatened to potentially lose an entire season.
There has been an agreement in the years following that temporary lockout that lasted 18 weeks. However, DeMaurice Smith recently told Albert Breer of SI.com that he strongly believes that a lockout in the 2021 season is imminent. (h/t Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk)
“I think that the likelihood of either a strike or a lockout in 2021 is almost a virtual certainty,” NFL Players Association DeMaurice Smith recently told Albert Breer in a video posted at SI.com.
At the same time, Smith voiced that he is uncertain at this point if any games will be missed because of the expected lockout. It is simply too far ahead to predict if this would bleed into the 2021 season given that much could develop between now and then.
Much of this will rely on the owners' willingness to give way to the players earning more financially on the next deal, which is set to be renegotiated in a couple of years. The last time around it turned out to be extremely difficult to get the owners to agree to a deal that gave the players a larger piece of the financial gains that the league garners.
All of this could inevitably point to the owners pushing for more financial control on the next agreement, which may create more issues down the road.
